The Rivers Community in Ogu kingdom, located in the Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State, has once again captured the attention of social media with its annual Iria festival. This ancient ceremony is a significant milestone in the lives of young virgins as they transition into womanhood.

According to a report by PUNCH, the Iria festival is a cherished tradition among the Okrika people, celebrated in various towns during the months of December and January. Dating back to the 16th century, this festival continues to generate excitement among both locals and outsiders alike. It has become a highly anticipated event, with people eagerly awaiting the last few months of the year to witness the initiation of young maidens into womanhood, often accompanied by the display of their bare breasts.

Beyond its entertainment value, the Iria Festival is also viewed as a yearly competition. Families in Okrika take advantage of this occasion to showcase the virtue of chastity. Parents proudly present their virgin daughters, preparing them for the "fattening room" where they are nourished with wholesome meals, such as pounded yam mixed with pounded plantain and fresh fish.

This year, photos from the Iria festival have gone viral on social media, further spreading the beauty and significance of this cultural celebration.
